CNN —Tiger Woods recorded his worst-ever score at the Masters to completely drop out of contention on an attritional third day, while Scottie Scheffler holds a one-shot lead going into the final round as he seeks a second career green jacket. Nonetheless, the 15-time major winner said he would be “ready” for the final round despite his worst performance at the tournament. Scottie Scheffler has a one-stroke lead ahead of the final round. The final round will begin at 9:15 a.m. ET on Sunday with the last pairing of Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa teeing off at 2:35 p.m.

Seventy-five years ago this past week, Sam Snead won the Masters Tournament and became the first champion to receive one of Augusta National Golf Club’s green jackets. Since the start of the month, Lottie Woad has captured the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. More than 30 past Masters winners gathered for dinner to honor Jon Rahm, last year’s champion, and Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson hit tee shots to start this year’s tournament. On Sunday, someone — perhaps someone new, perhaps someone already admitted to the locker room reserved for past champions — will win the 88th Masters. But this past week, all of the possibilities seemed to be on greater display than usual.

CNN —Tiger Woods delivered another solid performance on a marathon Friday at Augusta National to break the record for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters. A second round even-par 72 improved upon an opening one-over 73 and – with the projected cut-line at four-over par as he returned to the clubhouse – guaranteed Woods’ record-breaking 24th straight weekend at Augusta National. I have a chance to win the golf tournament,” Woods replied when asked by reporters what the milestone means to him. Donning his Sun Day Red apparel – released in collaboration with TaylorMade – at Augusta National, Woods rolled back the years at various points, starting with an audacious left-handed chip to escape the trees on Thursday. “I’ve always loved playing here, I’ve been able to play here since I was 19 years old,” Woods said.

Believe it or not, these are both sound bites from a golf tournament. A storm-delayed first round meant some players had to finish their first 18 holes Friday morning, exacerbating a grueling day. “Even the golf course was saying, ‘Get the hell out of here,’” Homa, chasing his first major, said. South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel clinched a two-shot victory at Augusta National in 2011, but crashed out after shooting 74 and 81. It’s “so far, so good” for Player, who played his last Masters in 2009 after a record 52 appearances at Augusta National. Player was renowned for his endurance across a five-decade career that reaped 165 tournament wins and nine major championships. “You do things in life for other people, and you try to have fun, and like Gary said, you’ve got to laugh.”Watson, Player and Nicklaus (left to right) drew huge crowds. “If you’re here, you are so blessed, and you should kiss the ground every day,” Player told Masters reporters on the range. “He’s a man who believed in freedom, and what he did for this great country, you can’t describe it.

CNN —It was the comment that landed him in hot water with Masters fans and aged terribly, but – 13 rounds later – Bryson DeChambeau finally shot below his interpretation of par at Augusta National. Now, the golfer once dubbed “the Scientist” for his willingness to test new technologies is owning up to old errors. “Clearly today was a great test of golf, and I was able to conquer a very difficult golf course today. I shot 65 today, and that was one of the best rounds of golf I’ve played in a long time. “That’s the secret to winning major championships and winning big-time golf tournaments: more limiting the mistakes rather than making a ton of birdies.

CNN —These days, Tiger Woods merely being among the field at The Masters is a story in itself, but the five-time champion insists he’s not returning to Augusta National to make up the numbers – he’s playing to win. “I haven’t got to that point where I don’t think I can’t.”One more Masters win would see Woods (pictured, 2000) tie Nicklaus (right) with six wins at Augusta National. SUN CITY, South Africa (AP) — Max Homa can finally say he's an international winner. Homa shot a 6-under 66 to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa on Sunday for his first win abroad. Homa finished at 19 under for the tournament, four shots ahead of Nicolai Hojgaard to add to his six PGA Tour career titles. Homa secured the win with a final round that included six birdies, an eagle and two bogeys. He also had a 66 on Friday, but shot even-par 72 both Thursday and Saturday to see his title chances diminished.

American Homa is on debut in South Africa but has mastered a difficult course and dropped just a single shot in 54 holes to finish his third round on 13 under-par for the tournament. He leads France’s Matthieu Pavon by a single stroke after they had shared the top of the leaderboard overnight. Pavon (70) carded five birdies and a bogey in his first 14 holes, but back-to-back dropped shots on 15 and 16 allowed Homa to leapfrog him on the leaderboard. The American's only dropped shot in three days came on the par three fourth, and his consistency in hitting fairways and solid form with the putter were a feature of his play. England's Tommy Fleetwood, who has won the last two Nedbank Golf Challenge tournaments, could only manage a 71 on Saturday for a total of seven under-par, six shots off Homa.

"Overall the first two days have been pretty solid," Pavon said. Pavon carded five birdies and an eagle, his only blemish a bogey at the par four 15th, as he followed up his opening round 68 on Thursday. Homa carded a 68 on Friday and is yet to drop a shot in 36 holes having sunk 10 birdies on his debut at Sun City. "If you are going to travel 20 or so hours to get here, you may as well play some good golf," he joked. Tommy Fleetwood has won the previous two tournaments played at the Gary Player Country Club and is four shots back going into the weekend after a second round 67.

Legendary golfer Gary Player thinks government and sports shouldn't mix, as the golf world goes through a major merger that has triggered antitrust concerns. He was an ambassador for Golf Saudi, an organization pushing to make the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a more prominent force in the sport. Player also said he supports the proposed merger between Saudi-backed LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, which has drawn criticism and scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers, not to mention golfers. (Previously, Player has spoken out against players leaving the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf, saying it's for "guys that can't win one the regular tour any more.") Last week, a U.S. Senate subcommittee held its second hearing on the proposed merger.

ROCHESTER, New York, May 15 (Reuters) - The PGA Tour and LIV Golf take their feud to Oak Hill Country Club for the PGA Championship this week with the Saudi-bankrolled rebel circuit again seeking major validation. That was until world number one Spaniard Jon Rahm came to the PGA Tour's rescue, finishing top of the leaderboard to leave Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson runners-up. Like the Masters there will be 18 LIV members in the field led by twice PGA Championship winners Koepka and 52-year-old Mickelson and Australian Cameron Smith, who signed on with LIV after winning last year's British Open. Rahm and world number two Scottie Scheffler both are in top form coming into Rochester. Spieth, who withdrew from the Byron Nelson citing a left wrist injury, needs only a PGA Championship to join the elite club that includes, Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.

McIlroy bid for a career Grand Slam ended when he shot a disappointing second-round 77 after being a favorite to win his first Green Jacket at Augusta National heading into the major. McIlroy will not be replaced by an alternate, with the field reduced to 143 players for the tournament on Hilton Head Island, where Jordan Spieth is the defending champion. The 33-year-old McIlroy, who captured the last of his four majors in 2014, had been hoping to win the Masters so that he could join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the only players to achieve the career Grand Slam. Woods withdraws from Masters due to foot injury

"I am disappointed to have to WD (withdraw) this morning due to reaggravating my plantar fasciitis," Woods said on Twitter. But in unforgiving conditions on a cold Saturday with heavy rain falling, Woods was visibly limping and made back-to-back double bogeys. Last year, in his second start after the crash, Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship after carding one of his worst rounds at a major tournament -- a nine-over 79. American Brooks Koepka leads Spaniard Jon Rahm by four shots with the third round of the Masters yet to be completed.
One of the pre-tournament favourites, McIlroy's disappointment dragged on into Saturday as 39 players returned to complete their weather hit rounds where the cut line was set at three over. Major winners Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson along with Jason Kokrak all missed the cut. Tiger Woods made the cut but by the skin of his teeth when good friend Justin Thomas bogeyed the 17th moving the cut line to three over. "I've always loved this golf course, and I love playing this event," said Woods at the end of his round before the cut line had been set. Couples also became the oldest player in Masters history to make the cut when the 63-year-old returned a second round two-over 74 for a one-over total.

"I just had breakfast with Jon Rahm and that didn't come up," laughed McIlroy, when asked if the three had discussed their dominance. It may be absurd to compare Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, who combined for 34 major titles, to Scheffler, McIlroy and Rahm but on current form the present-day trio are in a league of their own. McIlroy opened his campaign with victory at the CJ Cup and hoisted the trophy at the DP Tour's Dubai Desert Classic. "You can say that (the new Big Three), if we do it for at least five-plus years like many of those players did," said Rahm. World number one Scheffler would not be drawn into the Big Three discussion but put the trio's domination down to a high level of consistency.
